A Contemplative and Dutiful Sunday from the Bible: Proverbs

19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.

21 To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

23 He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.

24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.

25 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase….(gutenberg.org)

Manliness is a Quality That Causes Individuals to Stand For Something

In an age of lisping men with lotioned manicured hands and women displaying their vulvas to interested viewers, the return to manliness is the whimpering call of every male. Manliness to the rescue by Yale professor Harvey C. Mansfield. For women, several years devotion to a nunnery is prescribed.

ONE OF THE LEAST VISITED memorials in Washington is a waterfront statue commemorating the men who died on the Titanic. Seventy-four percent of the women passengers survived the April 15, 1912, calamity, while 80 percent of the men perished. Why? Because the men followed the principle "women and children first."

The monument, an 18-foot granite male figure with arms outstretched to the side, was erected by "the women of America" in 1931 to show their gratitude. The inscription reads: "To the brave men who perished in the wreck of the Titanic. . . . They gave their lives that women and children might be saved."

Today, almost no one remembers those men. Women no longer bring flowers to the statue on April 15 to honor their chivalry. The idea of male gallantry makes many women nervous, suggesting (as it does) that women require special protection. It implies the sexes are objectively different. It tells us that some things are best left to men. Gallantry is a virtue that dare not speak its name.

In Manliness, Harvey C. Mansfield seeks to persuade skeptical readers, especially educated women, to reconsider the merits of male protectiveness and assertiveness. It is in no way a defense of male privilege, but many will be offended by its old-fashioned claim that the virtues of men and women are different and complementary. Women would be foolish not to pay close attention to Mansfield's subtle and fascinating argument.

Mansfield offers what he calls a modest defense of manliness. It is modest, not because its claims are cautious–Mansfield courts wrath and indignation on almost every page–but because, as he says, "Most good things, like French wine, are mostly good and accidentally bad. Manliness, however, seems to be about fifty-fifty good and bad. . . . This is what I mean by a modest defense."

"Manliness," he says, "is a quality that causes individuals to stand for something." The Greeks used the term thumos to denote the bristling, spirited element shared by human beings and animals that makes them fight back when threatened. It causes dogs to defend their turf; it makes human beings stand up for their kin, their religion, their country, their principles. "Just as a dog defends its master," writes Mansfield, "so the doggish part of the human soul defends human ends higher than itself."

Every human being possesses thumos. But those who are manly possess it in abundance, and sometimes in excess. The manly man is not satisfied to let things be as they are, and he makes sure everyone knows it. He invests his perception of injustice with cosmic importance.

Manliness can be noble and heroic, like the men on the Titanic; but it can also be foolish, stubborn, and violent. Achilles, Brutus, and Sir Lancelot exemplify the glory of manliness, but also its darker sides. Theodore Roosevelt was manly; so was Harry "The Buck Stops Here" Truman. Manly men are confident in risky situations. Manliness can be pathological, as in gangsters and terrorists.

Manliness, says Mansfield, thrives on drama, conflict, risk, and exploits: "War is hell but men like it." Manliness is often aggressive, but when the aggression is tied to the concept of honor, it transcends mere animal spiritedness. Allied with reason, as in Socrates, manliness finds its highest expression…. (weeklystandard.com)

It May Be of Common Interest to Reduce Much of the City of San Francisco to Rubble

San Francisco, surely among the most disgusting places on earth, is hosting the dreaded Folsom Street Fair — again:

A taxpayer-supported "gay" celebration in San Francisco, featuring a poster portraying Jesus Christ and his disciples as "half-naked homosexual sadomasochists," has come under heavy fire from major Christian groups demanding that California lawmakers condemn it.

The poster by organizers of the Folsom Street Fair, sponsored in part by Miller Brewing, replaces the bread and wine representing Christ's blood and body with sadomasochistic sex toys.

"A picture's worth a thousand words," said Matt Barber, policy director for cultural issues with Concerned Women for America.

Barber said his group wants California's elected officials – including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer – to "publicly condemn this unprovoked attack against Christ and His followers."

…Barber said homosexual activists "disingenuously call Christians 'haters' and 'homophobes' for honoring the Bible, but then lash out in this hateful manner toward the very people they accuse."

"The most unimaginable and vile acts of debauchery are commonplace during the fair," Barber said.

…"There's an unbelievable news story here," he said. "The Folsom Street Fair is reminiscent of biblical Sodom and Gomorrah, and the media should document exactly what the city of San Francisco is allowing to occur – in public – in the name of 'tolerance.'"…(worldnetdaily.com)

Significant debate should occur on whether the United States Armed Forces should take preemptive action on these kinds of gatherings where evil-doers are concentrated together. A carpet bombing run along Folsom Street and selective missile strikes to clean up the rest of the rubbish would suffice if the debate carries to that decision.

Truly, it may be of common interest to reduce much of the city of San Francisco to rubble.

Salisbury, Maryland: A Generous Sprinkling of Robbery at 213 — Worst Crime Spree Yet

"This has got to be … the worst … crime spree … since the town's … incorporation. This is … good stuff … you should try some," Wicomico County Executive Richard M. "Rick" Pollitt mumbled between gobbling and puffing on doughnuts and confectioner's sugar.

"I's agrees…" Salisbury Mayor Barrie Tilghman slurred after a sip from a 40 ounce glass container.

"Just give me the chance to use my bullet in my breast pocket!" exclaimed Salisbury Police Chief Allan Webster.

In the town of Salisbury, MD, a town not unlike most towns—bleak, of little community value, of politicians conjuring dark designs against the citizens, and where no rule of law is recognized—citizens reveled in their plight when the FBI announced their town of Salisbury's latest crime statistics for 2006:

A handful of Murder at 5,

A goodly sum of Rape at 27,

A generous sprinkling of Robbery at 213,

An all-round touch of Aggravated Assault at 325,

A ringing endorsement of Property Crime at 2051,

A prodigious amount of Burglary at 638,

A rousing affair of Theft at 1813,

and finally, a swooping along of Motor Vehicle Theft at 131…. (fbi.gov)

There Comes a Time in Every Age When Decent Men and Women Must Take Action

There comes a time in every age when decent men and women must take action against those evil-doers who will collapse their  communities and way of life into violence and filth.

Therefore, we call on those decent people and their leaders to take immediate action against businesses and persons who press that foulest of discordance which they call "rap music" on the people and drive them to ruination.

The offending nature of rap music (henceforth referred to as discordance) and its purveyors speak for themselves and are easily recognized by a reasonable person of sound mind and values: the encouraging of wanton violence, the defilement of women, and the glorification of self-destructive practices such as the taking of illegal drugs.

Therefore, let the following be so:

  1. Government shall ban all discordance while promoting music more befitting of mankind, such as classical, jazz, and country music, etc.

  2. Arrest all persons significantly involved with the funding, production, and dispersal of all discordance that revels in either wanton violence, the defilement of women, self-destructive practices such as suicide and illegal drugs, or other obscene indignations to the common man.
  3. Those involved and found guilty of large scale dissemination of discordance will be sentenced to at least 1 year in jail and at least 10,000 dollars, where the effect the defendant has had on the community's level of decency is taken into account.
  4. Law enforcement will vigilantly monitor and inspect record companies, music media factories, shipping companies, financial institutions, and other businesses facilitating the spread of discordance, until the threat has significantly abated.  Law enforcement will prevent through act of law the export of discordance to other countries and their people's ruination.

Small audiences of untoward behavior are manageable. Large audiences of untoward behavior are a harbinger of society's total collapse and demand decent people's attention and action. Therefore, let law enforcement investigate for discordance those first who have a greater stake in society's collapse as Forbes richest rappers list reveals….(about.com)

Focus on the Family: Renewing the Teenage Mind

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1-2, NIV).

The most important skill you can teach your teen is the renewing of his mind. The mistake many parents make is to try to renew their teen's mind for him. Renewing the mind is a day-to-day process of thinking Biblically.

The car commercial that promises significance through horsepower and luxury is presenting a "truth claim" that is counter to the truth claims of the Bible. The world is full of counterfeit truth claims, but you can teach your teen to live according to God's reality. When the mind is renewed, God's will and reality become clearer.

Preparation

You may be thinking: But how do I teach my teen the skill of renewing the mind? To get started, you should first prepare your teen.

Begin by making sure your teen has the right set of expectations. Some people approach God's Word with the wrong set of expectations.

For example, does the Bible promise that if you follow all the commandments, you will have no struggles in life? Of course not. But it's not uncommon for a person to read the Bible with this kind of faulty expectation.

When your daughter opens the Bible, what should she expect? Teach her to look for who God is and what His world is really all about.

Next, help her understand that reading the Bible is having a conversation with God. As she reads, she can look for things that apply to her own circumstances and place in life….(Focus on the Family)

Immigration: Does “lower cost confinement” Mean Building 100 Million Dollar Structures?

It is always good to expand and clarify good principles, as shall be done on a directive within Immigration: The Final Solution:

"All illegal immigrants will be deported immediately. Illegal immigrants will be confined during their deportation procedures in at least a dozen efficient, simple, and low cost immigration camps along the border. Time is of the essence in deporting illegal immigrants and they will be deported quickly and efficiently, favoring lower cost confinement and exit transportation, for example."

Question: Does "lower cost confinement" mean building new 100 million dollar structures with cutting edge electronics, satellite TV, individual cell adjustable climate controls, and an on site electric power plant to power the whole complex?

Answer: No.

New detainment facilities for illegal immigrant are especially unwarranted where existing buildings can be converted and rehabilitated over to detainment use. Abandoned shopping malls, strip malls, and big box chain stores are commonplace and may be readily leased or bought.

Where urban infill is unavailable and new detainment facilities necessary, simple camps may be constructed of tarp tents, bunk beds, and lower cost provisions and amenities provided, as Sheriff Joseph M. Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona has done.
