Casinos, The New Hope of American Indians
Casinos—what American Indians have devolved to after generations of false hopes and promises by the American government. The few Indians that remain after being separated and slaughtered on a clear-cut North American landscape have succumb to giving false hopes to tourists and gamblers the same as the Bureau of Indian Affairs had done to the once mighty American Indian Tribes.
What kind of debate and wisdom occurred at the Indian tribal meeting that led to approving the operation of casinos on tribal lands? Most tribal meetings historically functioned by one person in possession of a speaking stick who spoke while the others were silent and listened, and
…if he feels he cannot honor the talking stick with his words, he should refrain from speaking so he will not dishonor himself. When he is again in control of his words, the stick will be returned to him. (acaciart.com)
In a casino, the deluge of bells, whistles, and lights is so overwhelming that no silence is offered for any presence of mind. With this backdrop of bedlam, casinos sell dashed hopes and that any reward is empty and unearned.
Surely the learning of their past heritage was forgotten and dishonored, otherwise the Indian leaders would have walked away from their casino approval meeting in shame and silence and returned only to prevent the addictive emptiness of gambling from bringing ruin to their tribe and other people.
